“Can transsexualism tell us anything about normal development? For some people, this is an interesting but bizarre condition, a shoddy amusement; one that is easily lost in frivolous details. To do so, however, is to miss the opportunity for an ‘experiment’ we would never ourselves dare perform, which may help us study the unfolding of masculinity and femininity in less aberrant people.”

He writes this after nearly fourteen years research on gay and transsexual patients. Yet in his mind there was still “normal” and “aberrant” behavior. Despite his professional opinion, he became a staunch advocate for removing homosexuality from psychology texts as a mental illness and a form of deviant behavior. While Money helped to separate gender from sex, it was Stoller (1964) whose work introduced “Core Gender Identity” into psychoanalytic literature and the minds of Western psychiatrists. Ten years after writing The Transsexual Experiment , Stoller expanded on the causative factors stating that they might occur as a result of family dynamics during the childhood phases of individuation and separation. This came from the theories of Margaret Mahler (Mahler, Pine, & Bergman, 1975).

In the introduction to his second volume, Stoller writes:

“I see male transsexualism as an identity per se…. To me, transsexualism is the expression of the individual’s true self.”

However, Stoller immediately tries to distance his belief from other common forms of cross-sexual identity confusion.

“On the other hand, the perversions of gender identity, such as fetishistic cross dressing, are compromises cemented over an earlier self that will never again be seen because the defense is so keenly pleasurable.”

It took Money to break gender out of anatomical sex, and now Stoller reconstitutes that idea into a completely separate personality structure. Core Gender Identity quickly became accepted by the medical community as part of human nature.
